What is Ijazah in Quran? (Quran Ijazah Meaning)

The History of Quran Ijazah
Quran Ijazah provides a chain of authorized Qur’an transmitters going back to the original author, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The Ijazah concept has a long, deeply rooted history. Since the year 100 A.H (700 CE), “Ijazah” has been a certification and license authorizing its holder to transmit a certain text or subject of knowledge, issued by a higher religious authority (usually an indirect student of the Prophet Muhammad or a famous Muslim scholar).
The goal of the Ijazah program is to establish narration with a chain of transmission that will eventually end at the origin of Hadith. It ensures that the scholars have a certificate of narration of texts whether through oral or written transmission.
It can be related to Quran or Hadith in different forms like Quran Tajweed, Quran Tafseer, Hadees text, etc.
These Ijazahs were given by students of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) or Sahabas.
“Sanad” refers to an unbroken chain of certified transmitters that can be traced all the way back to the original author.
The perseverance of the Quran and Hadith is due to this “Sanad” system devised by Islamic scholars. Moreover, the scholars have also devised a system to rank a sanad.
There are high-quality Sanads and low-quality Sanads depending upon various factors considered by Islamic scholastic practices.
Types of Ijazah
There are 2 main types of Ijazah in Quran:
- Ijazah in Quran Recitation with Tajweed
- Ijazah in Quran Memorization / Hifz Quran
1. Ijazah in Quran Recitation with Tajweed
Quran Recitation Ijazah is a certification stating that its holder has mastered Quran recitation with Tajweed and now he/she can teach Quran recitation/reading.
This type of Ijaza is granted to Quran students who can recite the whole Quran with Tajweed perfectly without any mistake.
Accordingly, the Quran learner obtains this certificate after reciting (reading) the whole Quran with applying Tajweed rules in the presence of an Ijazah certified Quran tutor, thus qualifying to achieve the status of “Mujeez” in Quran recitation with tajweed.

2. Ijazah in Quran Memorization / Hifz Quran
Quran Memorization Ijazah is a certification stating that its holder has mastered Quran memorization with Tajweed and became hafiz/hafiza of Quran. Now, he/she can teach Qur’an memorization to others.
This type of Ijazah is granted to Qur’an students who managed to memorize the Quran perfectly and can recite the whole Quran by heart (without reading from the holy Qur’an book) without any mistake.
Accordingly, the Qur’an learner obtains this certificate after memorizing the whole Quran perfectly and reciting it by heart in the presence of an Ijazah certified Quran tutor.
In this type, the student needs to memorize the whole Quran by heart and then be able to recite it without any mistake in the presence of Mujeez teacher (a Hafiz with Ijaza).
